Abstract

The aim of this study is to develop a questionnaire that investigates parental involvement in students' education through the students themselves, and to determine its reliability and structural validity. The initial version of our questionnaire consisted of 24 items and was based on questions developed by Mocho et al. and used in Portugal. After confirming the statistical significance and relevance of the items on a small pilot sample, we administered the survey to 452 students aged 12–17 from General Education Schools No. 24 and No. 97 in the capital city. The data were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. The factor analysis results indicate that parental and guardian involvement can be divided into three factors—participation in school activities, support for home learning, and monitoring communication with the school—and that the questionnaire is a reliable measurement instrument. With further validation on larger samples, this questionnaire could be developed into a research tool for use by educational and training institutions.
